Animal Habitat Examples

There are many, many different types of animals.  They all live in very different types of homes.  Some produce their own homes, like spiders and bees.  Other build homes, like birds and rabbits.  Still others live in places that they find in nature.  Learn more about a few different animal habitats.

Rabbit Warren

Rabbits dig burrows into the ground.  Sometimes a pair of rabbits will dig a single burrow.  Other times, a group of rabbits will dig many connected burrows, called a warren.  A warren gives rabbits a safe place to hide for predators.  It also gives them a safe place to raise their babies, called "kits."

Western Banded
Gecko

Robins build nests in high trees.  They make them by weaving straw and sticks together.  A nest in the trees keeps robins safe from predators.  They also keep robins eggs safe from predators.

Bee Hive

Worker bees create a hive for the bee colony.  They can produce the wax they need to build the hive.  Bee hives store the honey that bees eat.  Bee hives also give the bee colony a place to live in the winter when it is cold.

Robin's Nest

Western Banded Geckos live in the desert.  To beat the heat, they sleep during the day and are active at night.  Geckos do not build homes.  Instead, they find them.  Geckos will move into other animals' burrows, in a hollow log, or under a rock.  Rocks absorb heat during the day, so this type of home will help the gecko stay cool.
