Food

        Animals all eat different things.  Some eat plants (herbivores), some hunt other animals (carnivores).  Some animals eat both plants and meat (omnivores), and some eat the remains of other animals hunts (scavengers).

 

Water

       All animals need water.  Some get water by drinking from streams and lakes.  Animals who live in the ocean have water all around.  Animals who live in the desert have become very efficicent at saving water in their bodies.

 

Shelter (See Habitats)

      Animal live in all different types of homes.  These homes protect animals from bad weather, heat, and cold.  They also protect animals from other animals that may want to eat them.  Finally, shelters give animals a safe place to raise their babies.  

 

Oxygen

      All animals need to breathe oxygen.  Land animals draw oxygen from the air.  Animals who live in the ocean use their gills to filter oxygen from the water around them.
